SEED
LIST 2006
Growing Cacti & Succulents from seed is an interesting and
fascinating way to increase your collection. Often there are species
available as seed which may not be available as plants and
it is also a cheap way of adding many new species .
Seeds should be sown on the surface of a container filled with well
drained cactus compost and for best results covered with a thin layer of small
grit (NOT sand). This will keep the surface of the soil fresh and should stop
algae and moss from growing. It also helps to support the newly germinated
seedling. If the seeds are kept damp at a temperature of 21-25 C (70-80 F) then
many will germinate in 2-3 weeks. At lower temperatures it takes a little
longer. The ideal time to sow most seeds is soon after Christmas if you have a
propagator, or in Spring if you dont, so that the seedlings are as large as
possible before the next Winter.
A 2 inch pot is sufficient space
for a small packet of seeds,
a seed tray is
adequate for 1000 seeds. New seedlings have a very fine root system and the
longer they can be left undisturbed the quicker they will grow. (up to about 1
year)
